GOT ENOUGH WOOD FOR THE WINTER?

Many people ask us about how much wood they need for the winter months for their fireplace. Well, this all depends on how often you plan on using your fireplace to make fires. Estimates say that if your primary source of heating your home is firewood you’ll most likely need around 5 cords of wood, depending on the size of your home. If you plan to switch between wood and another form of heat to keep the house warm, we’d say get 2 cords of wood. And maybe you only use your fireplace on a few occasions for pleasure and not to heat your home, you’ll probably go through about half a cord of wood.

But what is a cord? you ask. 128 cubic feet of closely stacked wood.

Now you know.

HOW TO START A FIRE

Starting a fire in your fireplace is an easy task. Here is how to do it.

First, make sure the damper is in the open position.

Next, check to make sure the draft is going up by lighting a match. If the draft is coming down, do not light a fire.

If all is well, put some kindling on top of the grate and some crumpled up newspaper under the grate.

Put your fire wood on top of the kindling.

Light the kindling and Enjoy your fire!

Always keep an eye on the fire to make sure it doesn’t get too big and no flaming pieces exit the fireplace. It is recommended that you keep a fire extinguisher just in case.

You can always look up instructions if you’re still having trouble.

WHY USE A CHIMNEY CAP? PROS AND CONS

Chimney Caps are those metal things you see at the top of most chimneys, and they serve a very important purpose. But not everyone needs one, which is why we want to come and inspect your chimney and fireplace to see if you need to buy one.

Here are some reasons to have a chimney cap installed.

-Keep animals from entering the chimney flue, as well as sticks and leaves

-Keeps the chimney free from water and moisture, which can cause your chimney to smell

-Increases the draft

Here are some disadvantages to getting a chimney cap installed

-Possible draft restriction (if installed improperly by a novice or company that doesn’t care)

-Sometimes there can be clogging from the screen

-When not properly installed, a chimney cap can blow off in the wind.

Family Chimney Sweep promises to treat your home like our own. You can trust that we will provide you with the best service and prices, and that any problems will be taken care of right away.

YOU’LL NEVER KNOW WE WERE EVEN THERE

One thing Family Chimney Sweep prides itself on is its ability to come into your home and clean out your messy fireplace and chimney flue without making a mess.

Some of our customers tell us of previous chimney sweeps who have come into their homes and left smudge marks on the wall and around the outlets, tracked mud, dirt, snow and even dog poop on their rugs.

We’ve made it one of our missions to treat your home the same as we do our own, and promise that when we’re done working you will never know that we were even there…except for the fact that your fireplace is in perfect shape, your house is warm and smoke free, and your wallet is still filled with money.

We are courteous, friendly and respectful to you, your home and your family, including pets! We won’t wander around or talk on our phone, and we will never treat your home with disrespect because we want your repeat business.

So, the next time you want your fireplace and chimney worked on and you don’t want your house trashed, call us and set up an appointment.

You won’t be disappointed!

SOME CHIMNEY SWEEPS WILL RIP YOU OFF!

You have no idea how many horror stories we’ve been told over the years about some chimney sweeps who take advantage of the majority’s lack of fireplace and chimney knowledge.

These chimney sweeps will charge outrageous fees for their work, sometimes $50 more than what we charge for the same job.

And not only do they charge more, but they also don’t do a thorough job when hired to do work. We’ve seen half-cleaned fireplace flues and ones that weren’t cleaned at all.

We’ve also come across poorly installed chimney caps and chimney top dampers, and believe many of these people were tricked into thinking they needed these products when they really didn’t. And to hear what these companies charged the customer for things they didn’t need makes all chimney sweeps seem like rip-off artists, and we do everything to make sure OUR customers know that we would never suggest they get something that they don’t need.

Do the right thing and call us first!
