Most people have no idea what a brick actually is and how it is made and then somehow ends up as part of your chimney.

Well, we are here to tell you.

First off, there are a few different types of bricks, but clay bricks are the most common and most economical way to make them, and are probably the kind that you have on your chimney. Other types of brick are made from concrete, shale, slate and stone.

You start with the raw clay, with about 30% sand to reduce the shrinkage. Then the clay is ground and mixed with water until the desired consistency is met. Then, the clay gets pressed into steel molds with a hydraulic press. Once the clay is shaped, it is burned at 1000 degrees celsius until strong enough to be placed on your chimney.

Now you know!
